Chiropractic

Are there any side effects of Chiropractic treatment?

As with any procedure applied to the body, temporary side effects are possible for around 24-72 hours after treatment. It is common to experience mild to moderate aches and pains, stiffness and tiredness. However, these side effects are usually mild and generally pass within a few days.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?

No, you can book directly with our Chiropractor.

Is Chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is a well-recognised form of musculoskeletal therapy, and treatment is safe when performed correctly by a registered practitioners.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, certain risks may increase. For this reason, the Chiropractor will take a detailed medical history and examine you prior to treatment, during the initial consultation. For this reason, it is essential that you provide the Chiropractor with accurate information regarding your medical history. The Chiropractor is obliged to treat all information confidentially. Any particular risks that may be relevant to you or your condition should be explained by the Chiropractor before consent to treatment is given.

Our Chiropractor is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and the British Chiropractic Association (BCA).

What is the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath?

Chiropractors and Osteopaths both fall under the same umbrella term of “Musculoskeletal Therapists”. This means that they both work with the muscles and joints to help the body move and feel better. Many of the techniques practiced in each profession overlap, so often it is difficult to tell the difference between the two.

It’s similar to comparing and iPhone with an Android. They are different phones but ultimately achieve the same core goals – making phone calls and sending text messages.

The best advice is to find SOMEBODY who works for YOU, rather than focusing on which profession they fall under.

Do Chiropractors only treat backs?

No! Take a look at our “What We Treat” page to see how we can help the neck, shoulders, glutes, hips, knees, elbows, wrists, ankles and feet too!

What makes the “popping” noise when I get adjusted?

In short, the noise is actually a release of gas from between the joints, a bit like popping bubble wrap! This release of air is one technique which enables joints to move more freely. Not all chiropractic techniques involve audible manipulation and it shouldn’t be associated with a more effective adjustment.

Do Chiropractors only "crack" people?

No! Here at Gatehouse Health, our goal is to provide a high standard of individualised, patient-centred care to help you function to the best of your abilities. It’s all about finding what works for each person, whether that’s spinal manipulation, mobilisation, massage, dry needling, more emphasis on an exercise program or lifestyle advice.

How many Chiropractic sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition, its severity, and your response to treatment. Some people improve after a few sessions, while others may need ongoing support. Your practitioner will discuss this with you.

Do you offer home exercise programs?

Yes. Most Chiropractic treatment plans include customised home exercises to support recovery, maintain progress between sessions, and help you become more self-sufficient in managing your condition.

Will I feel sore after treatment?

Sometimes muscle soreness can occur after a Chiropractic treatment, similar to the feeling you get after exercise. It should subside within 24–48 hours.

Do you offer packages or discounts for multiple treatments?

Yes.

For Chiropractic appointments, we offer a 6-session block booking deal.

What should I do after my Chiropractic treatment?

After treatment, it’s essential to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous activities, and listen to your body. Your chiropractor may offer specific post-treatment care instructions.

What should I wear to my appointment?

For a chiropractic appointment, it’s best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy movement. You will NOT be asked to undress to underwear. The goal is to ensure that you can easily move and that the chiropractor can easily access the areas they need to work on. If you’re unsure, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and ask if there’s a specific type of clothing recommended based on your condition.

How many Physiotherapy sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition, its severity, and your response to treatment. Some people improve after a few sessions, while others may need ongoing support. Your practitioner will discuss this with you.

What happens during my first Physiotherapy appointment?

Your physiotherapist will:

  • Take a detailed history of your symptoms and medical background

  • Perform a physical assessment

  • Diagnose the issue

  • Develop a personalised treatment plan

You may receive hands-on treatment and some exercises to start with.

What’s the difference between a Physiotherapist and a personal trainer?

A physiotherapist is a licensed healthcare professional who diagnoses and treats physical conditions, injuries, and movement disorders. A personal trainer helps clients improve fitness and strength but does not treat medical issues. Physiotherapy is clinical and rehabilitation-based; personal training is performance- and wellness-focused.

Is Physiotherapy only for injuries?

No. While injury recovery is a common reason people seek physio, it can also help:

  • Improve mobility and flexibility

  • Manage chronic conditions (e.g., arthritis, fibromyalgia)

  • Enhance athletic performance

  • Support surgical recovery

  • Prevent future issues

Do I have to be sporty to benefit from a Sports Massage or Dry Cupping Therapy?

No, you don’t have to be sporty to benefit from either a sports massage or cupping therapy! Both therapies can be beneficial for a wide range of people, not just athletes.

Sports Massage:

  • While it is commonly used by athletes to help with muscle recovery and injury prevention, sports massage is also great for anyone experiencing muscle tension, stress, or discomfort due to daily activities, poor posture, or sitting for long periods.
  • It can help improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness, and even increase flexibility.
  • People who engage in any physical activity (not necessarily “sport”) like gardening, walking, or lifting heavy objects can also benefit.

Dry Cupping Therapy:

  • Cupping is known for its ability to relieve muscle tension and promote relaxation. It works by creating a suction effect on the skin, which can help with blood flow, muscle recovery, and detoxification.
  • It can be especially helpful for those with tension in their upper back, shoulders, and neck from sitting at a desk or other repetitive movements.

In short, both therapies are versatile and can be adapted to suit your individual needs, whether or not you’re involved in sports!

Do I need to be menopausal to benefit from a Menopause Therapeutic Massage?

One of the most common symptoms associated with menopause is emotional turbulence. As women experience hormonal changes, levels of oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, often leading to mood swings, irritability, and heightened anxiety. The relationship between emotional stress and physical well-being is well documented, particularly when it comes to the musculoskeletal system. Stress and anxiety cause the body to produce cortisol, the primary stress hormone, which can have several detrimental effects, including increased muscle tension, joint pain, reduced mobility, and headaches.

Menopause Theraputic Massage therapy combines traditional massage techniques with an approach that nurtures both the body and mind, helping a person to help manage menopause-related stress, anxiety, and musculoskeletal discomfort:

However, a person may experience the symptoms of stress and anxiety from causes other than the menopause too. This holistic therapy is also beneficial to anyone looking for a general well-being massage.

Craniosacral Therapy

Is Craniosacral Therapy safe?

Yes, Craniosacral Therapy is very gentle and non-invasive, making it suitable for people of all ages, including babies, pregnant women, and the elderly. It works with the body, not against it.

What happens during a Craniosacral Therapy session and what does it feel like?

During a Craniosacral Therapy session, you’ll lie fully clothed on a treatment table in a quiet, relaxed environment. The therapist will gently place their hands on specific areas such as your head, neck, spine, or sacrum, using a light touch to assess and release tension in the craniosacral system.

People often describe the experience as deeply calming. You may feel warmth, gentle pulsing, or a soft unwinding sensation. Some clients enter a meditative or dream-like state, and it’s not uncommon to fall asleep. Others may experience subtle emotional or physical releases as the body lets go of stored tension. Every session is unique, and your therapist will work at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you.

How do I prepare for a Craniosacral Therapy session?

No special preparation is required. It’s helpful to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and arrive with an open mind. Try to allow some quiet time after the session if possible.

Is Craniosacral Therapy supported by evidence?

There is growing anecdotal and clinical support for CST, though scientific research is still developing. Many clients report positive changes, especially in areas where conventional approaches have been limited.

Can Craniosacral Therapy be used alongside other treatments?

Yes, Craniosacral Therapy works well in conjunction with other therapies, including physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, counselling, and conventional medicine.
