The muscles of the pelvic floor form a fundamental part of our musculoskeletal system. They provide support for our pelvic organs, helping to keep them in the correct place. They are integral in maintaining continence of both urine and faeces, they aid us during childbirth and they also have an important role in sexual function.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to many distressing issues that can be helped significantly by targeted exercises. These might be strengthening exercisers or exercises aimed more at relaxation depending on what the underlying issues are. Alongside this, treatment might also include advice on lifestyle modification and specific strategies and modalities to help improve symptoms further.

What to expect during your appointment

Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of pelvic health assessments they will be conducted in a safe and private environment at the clinic. A thorough history will be taken of your symptoms, overall health and lifestyle. Most patients will be offered an internal examination to assess the tissues and pelvic floor for strength, tension or any discomfort or dysfunction.

If you have any further questions about this then please don’t hesitate to contact our physiotherapist in advance.

Treatments include education, lifestyle changes, bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, external and internal manual therapy, EMG biofeedback, electrical stimulation and relaxation and breathing techniques alongside support on returning to activity/exercise post-surgery or pregnancy and advice on vaginal pessaries.
